COVID-19 PSA: Natchez Mayor 3-12-20
Mayor's Announcement 3/12/2020
On February 26, 2020, Natchez was the first city in Mississippi to form a Coronavirus Preparedness Task Force. The Task Force has worked diligently to prepare our community for a potential local impact of this virus.
Yesterday, Wednesday, March 11, three major events occurred:
1. The World Health Organization declared that Coronavirus was now a worldwide pandemic.
2. The Mississippi State Department of Health announced the first case of coronavirus in our state, near Hattiesburg.
3. President Trump addressed the nation to announce health, travel, and economic initiatives to combat the impact of the virus in the United States.
My #1 concern is the health and well-being of the citizens of Natchez-Adams, especially our elderly citizens, those in senior living facilities, and those with underlying conditions such as asthma, COPD, or compromised immune systems.
Therefore, in an abundance of caution, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that all citizens heed the following advice from our Natchez Coronavirus Preparedness Task Force to help protect our senior population.
Regarding seniors in hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities:
— Visitation from the community should be greatly limited.
— Reductions in duration, frequency, and the number of visitors should be considered to protect our most fragile community population.
— Individuals should carefully balance the need of visiting loved ones against the risks to the residents.
Also, Senior citizens or others who have underlying health conditions should avoid large gatherings and events in the coming months to prevent contact with this virus if present.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND that a large part of preventing the spread of this virus is literally in your hands.
Wash your hands with soap and water.
Don’t touch your face.
Sneeze or cough into your elbow or Kleenex, which you discard.
And …. if you are sick, please stay home.
Thank you for your attention.
Stay well and God Bless.
